HERBS AND THE BIBLE
What does God say about herbs in the Bible? by Courtney Cosgrove, MD
Plants have been intimately linked to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being
of people since the beginning of time.
Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. They
are subtle, volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and
seeds. The distillation of an entire plant may produce only a single drop of essential
oil.
As the most powerful part of the plant, essential oils and plant extracts have been
woven into history since time immemorial. Essential oils have been used medicinally
to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses. They provide exquisite fragrances to balance
mood, lift spirits, dispel negative emotions. They can stimulate the regeneration of
tissue or stimulate nerves. They can even act to oxygenate and carry nutrients into
the cells.
Isaiah 66:14, Your bones shall flourish like an herb. This is the result of being comforted.
Our life is in our blood the Bible says in Lev. 17:11, And our blood comes
from our bones. But it is kept alive by what we eat.
Deuteronomy 11:10 Tells us that the Israelites each had a garden of herbs.
Prophets were herbalists
I Kings 21:2, King Ahab's wife, Jezebel, had Naboth killed so the king could get his
vineyard to plant an herb garden. Here we have a type of Christ. (Matt. 22:33)
Naboth, put to death innocently for a vineyard (the church, an herb garden).
II Kings 4:39, At the school of the prophets they were herbalists and in this text it
says that one went out into the field to gather herbs, thus obeying God. This story
shows that you have to know what you are doing if you're picking wild herbs for
yourself, because not all are easily and safely used. Furthermore gourds are never
used in modern herbology.
Solomon, the wisest of kings, spoke of trees and hyssop
Proverbs 27:25 - Solomon tells us that the herbs of the mountains are to be gathered
and used. Here the wisest man (I Kings 4:29-34) recommends using herbs.
Isaiah 26:19 says 'Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust. for thy dew (or youth) is
like the dew of herbs ....' This tells us that at the resurrection when people are
brought back to life that the life given them will be similar to the life giving properties
of some herbal plants. Taking herbs can be like taking new life pills.
Luke 11:42 - Jesus talks about tithing on mint, rue, and every kind of garden herb.
He's not putting them down for doing that. He's just saying you're trying to please
God by being legalistic and making sure you tithe on every little thing. This shows
that most people grew their own herbs for cooking and medicinal uses. It's obvious
the knowledge of herbs was common. The mint herb is increasingly known for
medicinal uses today. Rue is useful for food poisoning.
